The Marathas played a very important role in the 17th and 18th century History of India. Their relations with the French brought ?amazing? transformation in the diplomacy of the English East India Company. The Maratha State which gradually got transformed into a Confederacy is been underestimated for its contributions to the 17th and 18th century Indian History. This book encompasses on the relations of the Marathas with the French and all the other contemporary indigenous and foreign powers and traces the realities and under currents of politics, diplomacy and economy in the 17th and 18th century India. The History of the Marathas stands to be a major land mark in the making of the 18th century India, the study of the relations between the French and the Marathas is one important aspect of the History of the Marathas. The present work is an attempt to understand the dynamics and significance of these relations mainly in the political context.
About the Author :
DR.UMESH ASHOKRAO KADAM (b.1976), completed matriculation at St. Xaviers High School, Kolhapur (1991), Bachelor of Arts from D.D. Shinde Sarkar College, Kolhapur (1996), Master of Arts from Shivaji University, Kolhapur (1998), Ph.D. from Shivaji University, Kolhapur (1999-2005). Has worked as Lecturer in the Department of History, Shivaji University, Kolhapur (1999-2003), since 2003, he is working as Lecturer in the Department of History, University of Pune. Dr.Umesh Kadam has visited Biblitheque Nationale, Archives Nationale in Paris and British Library and India Office Library in London under Research Scholarships provided by Indian Council of Historical Research, New Delhi, Masion de Sciences de l?Homme, Paris and Charles Wallace India Trust, London. Recently he has been awarded the Indo-French Social Scientist Award under the Indo French Social Scientist Exchange Programme 2007. He has published research articles in Journals of National and International repute on Maratha History and Historiography. Currently he is working on a project entitled "Relations between the French and the Marathas with special reference to the French diplomatic projects in India proposed during 1761 to 1818".
